Over the course of a few months, we had the opportunity to shoot this custom metal island in various stages as it made its way through the Huston & Company workshop. Built for an industrial-style loft in downtown Portland, the island is constructed of a metal base, topped with a slab of granite and a walnut butcher block. Accents come in the form of a rich, live edge walnut bar, the perfect spot to cozy up to on a stool, and a storage area for wine, also made of walnut.
Before affixing the granite our client supplied us with, we needed to blacken the metal base of the island.

The island really began to take shape a few weeks into the process and we couldn’t resist placing the different pieces on the metal base for a glimpse at what the finished product would look like.
We were able to deliver the island to its new home in a downtown Portland loft just before the holidays, in time for our client to entertain during the festive season. The light cabinets and the hand-painted mural on the wall of the kitchen, a nod to the homeowner’s native state of Hawaii, function as the perfect complement to the richness of the island and the wood throughout the loft.
We love how this piece of art seems to anchor the island from multiple angles.
Working on this custom island so closely with our client was a mutually collaborative process and one we thoroughly enjoyed.
