...building the workshop in Poland Spring.

In the summer of 1987, Bill Huston began work on his own furniture-making workshop in Poland Spring, Maine. The shop was to sit next to his home, on his 11-acres of woods and field. “Huston & Company” was still just notes in a journal, but beginning to take shape.

In 1989, Bill Huston built a Standing Mirror for his bride, Mia, as a wedding gift. In the years following, Huston & Company built a handful for clients - each one slightly different than the last.

In 2005, shortly after coming to work at Huston & Company, Saer Huston built a standing mirror for his girlfriend, Genell, who is now his wife.

There is something very personal and very romantic about gifting a dressing mirror to the woman you love. There is a message there; something about loving every bit of her, even how she sees herself.

As many of you may have read this past week on our Facebook page, I’ve been exploring our archives; shuffling through photos, old advertisements, newspaper articles, early catalogs. As our 25thanniversary year is well underway, we have a mailing coming up that we need to design and many of these old images will come in handy.

So far, I’ve only perused one box of goodies, and there are, I think, seven. Already I’ve been having much fun. Among the unsurprising images of the early workshop in Poland Spring, the first few “signature”...

As with any creative industry, brand, or product, we have our own “design vocabulary.” A design vocabulary is not a list of words, or even a list of details, but rather the overall, overarching style of a group of products that brings them all together; makes them complement one another. Our design vocabulary is what makes a Huston piece recognizable as a Huston piece. It’s also what differentiates our designs from those of other furniture builders. It is what makes our designs OURS.

We are very excited to share our newly updated website with you this week.

For several weeks we’ve been working with website developer, Kevin Brooks, on a fresh new pallette of colors and a reorganization of our site. We love the new look and functionality.

We had a short list of goals for the website update:

  • re-fresh the entire site using a new color pallette
  • increase the visibility of our “For Your Home” offerings
  • simplify the...

Just before Christmas in 2002, Collin Huston asked his father, Bill, if he could build a table for his mother, Mia, as a gift. When you ask such a question of your furniture-making father, he beams with pride and immediately starts teaching you how to use the rip-saw.

Even if you’re only 11.

1988 – 2013
25 Years

Yes, it’s true. This year marks the 25thanniversary of Huston & Company. As many of you know, Bill started Huston & Company in Poland Spring, Maine, in April of 1988. It was never his intention to grow Huston & Company to a large manufacturing business, but rather to maintain a small sized, highly personalized business in which he could develop relationships and friendships with his customers, maintain a very high level of quality of...
