We are very excited to share our newly updated website with you this week.

HustonAndCompany.com

For several weeks we’ve been working with website developer, Kevin Brooks, on a fresh new pallette of colors and a reorganization of our site. We love the new look and functionality.

We had a short list of goals for the website update:

  • re-fresh the entire site using a new color pallette
  • increase the visibility of our “For Your Home” offerings
  • simplify the...

Just before Christmas in 2002, Collin Huston asked his father, Bill, if he could build a table for his mother, Mia, as a gift. When you ask such a question of your furniture-making father, he beams with pride and immediately starts teaching you how to use the rip-saw.

Even if you’re only 11.

1988 – 2013
25 Years

Yes, it’s true. This year marks the 25thanniversary of Huston & Company. As many of you know, Bill started Huston & Company in Poland Spring, Maine, in April of 1988. It was never his intention to grow Huston & Company to a large manufacturing business, but rather to maintain a small sized, highly personalized business in which he could develop relationships and friendships with his customers, maintain a very high level of quality of...

The workshop has been so busy for so many months now; it’s noisy and bustling and just full of energy everywhere.

I recently walked out to the workshop during lunchtime to warm up by the woodstove, and found it deserted…still and quiet with only the faint buzzing sound of the air compressors. It was so unusual, like a moment stopped in time.

I grabbed my camera to see if I could visually convey the stillness.

We are working on a dining table in the workshop this week that I just had to share with you. It’s a round pedestal table to seat eight. We are building it for a ‘cottage’ here in Kennebunkport, on Ocean Avenue.

Built of solid cherry, the turned pedestal on this table is 12” in diameter. The turning was created for us by a local turning wizard, Steve Hanson, to our exact specifications. It’s beautiful. And heavy.

As we turn to the new year, we are grateful for a full worklist and a busy shop. We are grateful to our customers (most of all), our friends, the vendors that supply us with our wonderful materials, and the many businesses that work with us to keep us smart, strong and successful.

And we know there are many out there that are trying to get a leg-up. We know many of them are very talented, creative and savy. We know many of them just need a boost and they'll be successful.

So, for the first post of the new year, I thought it would be fun to highlight some of those...

There’s nothing quite like a challenging custom order to keep us all happy here. I can safely speak for everyone at Huston & Company and say that if we didn’t have unique orders to build in our shop, and instead had to build the same thing over and over again, we wouldn’t be here. And while we have our own design vocabulary and our own unique style, it is with great pleasure that we take on those projects that are out of our norm, are larger than life, and really challenge us.

When an interior designer from a...

Like chipmunks getting ready for winter, the guys in the shop are running, running, running. These scholar carrels for Princeton are in the final stages. They are being fully assembled, one by one, before being taken apart and sent for final finishing. Each one is like a small apartment with four rooms. Small buildings built to fine-furniture standards.
