We’re very excited to introduce a new member of our Rivers family: the Rivers Bed. Designed by Bill and Saer Huston, the Rivers Bed is a natural extension of our Rivers grouping.

The Rivers Bed, handcrafted by Huston & Company, Kennebunkport, Maine

Created in the same singular manner as each of our Rivers tables, each Rivers Bed will be unique. The river which flows across the headboard is created by following the grain of the wood, carving down to...

The summer of our 25thyear is upon us. As the temperature in Maine heats up we are making plans to celebrate our anniversary with all of our customers and friends. Here are a few events we are pulling together.

We’ll keep it simple this week. No digging through archival boxes of photos, no reminiscing about beginnings; just some plain old ‘whatter you up to’ updates.

The workshop is very busy this spring. We had a fairly slow winter, but someone stepped on the gas about two months ago and we’ve been chasing the checkered flag ever since. We are currently working with a 12-week lead time, which is the longest lead time we’ve had in several years. The work isn’t relegated to one side of our business: both residential and academic/library are on high...

In the summer of 1987, Bill Huston began work on his own furniture-making workshop in Poland Spring, Maine. The shop was to sit next to his home, on his 11-acres of woods and field. “Huston & Company” was still just notes in a journal, but beginning to take shape.

In 1989, Bill Huston built a Standing Mirror for his bride, Mia, as a wedding gift. In the years following, Huston & Company built a handful for clients - each one slightly different than the last.

In 2005, shortly after coming to work at Huston & Company, Saer Huston built a standing mirror for his girlfriend, Genell, who is now his wife.

There is something very personal and very romantic about gifting a dressing mirror to the woman you love. There is a message there; something about loving every bit of her, even how she sees herself.

As many of you may have read this past week on our Facebook page, I’ve been exploring our archives; shuffling through photos, old advertisements, newspaper articles, early catalogs. As our 25thanniversary year is well underway, we have a mailing coming up that we need to design and many of these old images will come in handy.

So far, I’ve only perused one box of goodies, and there are, I think, seven. Already I’ve been having much fun. Among the unsurprising images of the early workshop in Poland Spring, the first few “signature”...

As with any creative industry, brand, or product, we have our own “design vocabulary.” A design vocabulary is not a list of words, or even a list of details, but rather the overall, overarching style of a group of products that brings them all together; makes them complement one another. Our design vocabulary is what makes a Huston piece recognizable as a Huston piece. It’s also what differentiates our designs from those of other furniture builders. It is what makes our designs OURS.
