12/8/14 - This table has found a new home.

In 1999, we built this beautiful York Dining Table for a client here in Kennebunkport. She recently decided she no longer needs such a large table and would like to sell it, to give it a good home. She asked if we might be able to spread the word.

This is a standard York Dining Table, made of oak with Wenge inlay.
It measures 30”H x 84”L x 43.5”W and seats 8 very comfortably. It is in good...

Recently, at one of our Tuesday morning shop meetings, Ethan announced that our air compressor had died the day before. He had been keeping an eye on it for quite some time; giving it little fixes and repairs as needed, allowing it to limp along. But now it was, indeed, dead.

The air compressor sends forced air throughout our shop to power all of our pneumatic tools, such as hand sanders and our CNC machine. Without the compressor, we can’t do any sanding, we can’t use our wide-belt sander, our CNC and some of our clamping tools. Heck, we can’t even dust ourselves...

Here we are, moving out of February and into March. In with the lions, as they say. We have been moving quickly forward here at Huston & Company, but looking back also. 2013 was a big year for us; our 25th anniversary year and a very busy one too. We built approximately 105 pieces of residential furniture last year, and over 250 pieces for colleges, schools, libraries and businesses.

As we reflected, I asked each of the guys to tell me their favorite piece of Huston...

Just before Christmas, we all gathered at Flatbread in Portland to celebrate the season and a very exciting and successful 2013. I'm sorry we didn't get pictures of everyone, but as you can see, fun was had by all.

And good food. Lots of good food.

I mean that. We've been too busy to write a blog post. No time for words. But, alas, we are slowing enough to breathe now, so I can share what we've been up to.

Here are a few images of recent work:

About 15 years ago, we designed and built a custom executive desk for a local client’s home office. She had just purchased a lovely summer home here and it had a fantastic home library with handcrafted cherry shelving on 3 of the four walls and lovely views from the windows.

The room was quite large, so she wanted a large desk to center in the room. We designed the desk below; it looks as though the room was built around it. Indeed, our client had hardwoods installed in the center of the room to further frame the desk in its surroundings.

Now, our client is selling her...

In April of 1988, a gentleman named Jim Carbone, a resident of NYC at the time, placed an order for a custom TV cabinet and end table with Bill Huston. This was Huston & Company’s very first order. I have had occasion to peruse this order file several times during my nine years at Huston & Company; first during our 20th anniversary year, and quite a few times this year, our 25th anniversary year.

Like all businesses that sell things, at the end of the year we take inventory. It only takes us about an hour usually, and we don’t have to hire an outside team to do it, but still, we like to have as little to count as possible.

This year, our loft is very full. We don’t have a lot of odds and ends as we often do. Instead, this year, we have a lot of brand new inventory. We made a point of overbuilding a number of items this year, so we’d have inventory to sell. We have sold a lot of it, but there is still a plethora of goodies upstairs.
