I mean that. We've been too busy to write a blog post. No time for words. But, alas, we are slowing enough to breathe now, so I can share what we've been up to.

Here are a few images of recent work:

About 15 years ago, we designed and built a custom executive desk for a local client’s home office. She had just purchased a lovely summer home here and it had a fantastic home library with handcrafted cherry shelving on 3 of the four walls and lovely views from the windows.

The room was quite large, so she wanted a large desk to center in the room. We designed the desk below; it looks as though the room was built around it. Indeed, our client had hardwoods installed in the center of the room to further frame the desk in its surroundings.

Now, our client is selling her...

In April of 1988, a gentleman named Jim Carbone, a resident of NYC at the time, placed an order for a custom TV cabinet and end table with Bill Huston. This was Huston & Company’s very first order. I have had occasion to peruse this order file several times during my nine years at Huston & Company; first during our 20th anniversary year, and quite a few times this year, our 25th anniversary year.

Like all businesses that sell things, at the end of the year we take inventory. It only takes us about an hour usually, and we don’t have to hire an outside team to do it, but still, we like to have as little to count as possible.

This year, our loft is very full. We don’t have a lot of odds and ends as we often do. Instead, this year, we have a lot of brand new inventory. We made a point of overbuilding a number of items this year, so we’d have inventory to sell. We have sold a lot of it, but there is still a plethora of goodies upstairs.

Jill Strauss and Val Glynn have been customers at Huston & Company for years. They first purchased a custom writing table from us in 2004. They have added pieces here and there ever since. Their home is a treasure trove of custom furniture. In fact, you’d be hard-pressed to find a piece of furniture in Jill and Val’s home that wasn’t handcrafted by one of Maine’s finest furniture-makers.

I have to admit, I'm struggling to get blog posts out as regularly as I'd like. My desk is piled with "to-do" lists, the shop is piled with stacks of furniture parts, the finishing shop is piled with stacks of completed library carrels and more stacks to be completed.

So, my apologies that these posts aren't as weekly as they have been in the past.

Today, I'm posting about a great table that we've just completed and delivered to a client outside of New York City. It's a custom version of our...

Wow, busy days.

The workshop is humming along with six furnituremakers, piles and stacks of carrel walls, a great variety of music throughout the day and some interesting residential pieces.

Our shop schedule for the fall is, believe it or not, full. Hard to believe I'm saying this on the first days of September. We are currently taking orders for the end of December.

While we are excited to be so busy, we know it can be discouraging to place an order for furniture that you won't see for such a long time. And we know some of you want to ...

The Huston Coat Tree has been the single best selling piece of furniture at Huston & Company since Bill started his business. It has become the most recognizable piece in our collection. This fall, we anticipate the sale of the 1,000thcoat tree, which is already built and in stock in our showroom. To date we have sold 989.

We think selling number 1,000 in our 25thyear would be quite a coup.

When it was first commissioned by Carolyn Lackey of Chicago, in 1988, Bill instinctively designed the coat tree with a cast iron base. He knew cast...

Here at Huston & Company, there is always someone working on a personal project in the workshop. They stay late on weekdays, or come in on weekends and build some pretty amazing things. Sometimes these gems are for themselves, and sometimes for lucky gift recipients.

In the past couple of months, two Huston boys have been working diligently on personal projects.

In late June, Bill and his youngest son, Collin, could be found here on weekend days, working on a new coffee table for Collin’s apartment in New Hampshire. Having ordered “hairpin” legs...

Huston & Company
Celebrates 25 Years of Fine Furniture
And a Future of Family Business

Saer and Bill Huston look on as Bill's brother, Bob, talks at the company's 25th anniversary.

On July 27th, we celebrated the 25th Anniversary of Huston & Company with family, friends and customers. The sun came out, between rainy days, and gave us a perfect setting for our anniversary picnic.

Bill's family came from Portland,...
